Power of ideas 2012: Online taxi startups like Ola Cabs, Savaari spell good business for taxi drivers

Posted on October 26 2012 -Kalpesh Desai, 32, who drives his own taxi in Mumbai, dreams big these days. Desai's income has gone up 40% in the six months since joining online taxi aggregation startup Ola Cabs. "I will pay off my car loan in two to three years and then buy another car and employ a driver for that," says Desai, the sole bread-winner of his family. "I will become a cab operator from being a driver." But it is not just about the money. "My life has improved," says Desai, who has two young children.

Tourism department for promotion of safe driving

Posted on July 27 2012 -To promote smooth and safe driving, Tourism Department will be imparting training to the drivers associated with tourism industry.
This was disclosed at a meeting convened by Minister of Tourism, Nawang Rigzin Jora here today.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Home, Tourism and Culture, Nasir Aslam Wani, Commissioner Secretary, Trourism, Atal Dulloo, Director Tourism, Talat Parvez, S.P Tourism and representatives of various Driver Associations.
The meeting deliberated upon the organizing training cum workshop for the drivers especially those associated with tourism industry in all the three regions of the state.

Instilling right values to prevent accidents

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 79 per cent of accidents in 2010-11 occurred due to the drivers’ (as in chauffeur) fault. Realising that it is important to impart soft skills and improving behavioural aspects of drivers if the number of accidents has to be brought down, some companies have introduced special training programmes for drivers.

GlobalTHEN looking to raise series A funding

Posted on April 12, 2012 - Global Travel &Hospitality Education Network (GlobalTHEN), a start-up focusing on the tourism and hospitality space, is looking to raise an institutional round of funding after roping in big names in the technology and venture capital industries as angel investors, according to a report by Anand Rai in VCCircle.com.

The company received Rs 1.8 crore in an angel round in April last year from big names like Deep Kalra, Founder and CEO, MakeMyTrip; Alok Mittal, MD, Canaan India; Rajiv Vij, CEO, Carzonrent; Philip Wolf, Chairman, PhoCusWright; Peter Harbison, Executive Chairman, Center for Asia Pacific Aviation; Cameron Jones, VP – Commercial, SilverRail Technologies; and Olivier Jager, CEO, Forwardkeys. The firm had been operating in stealth mode until recently.
